Sacraments
The Book of Common Prayer speaks of the sacraments as an ‘outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace’. The word ‘sacrament’ comes from the Latin sacramentum, referring to a soldier’s oath of allegiance or pledge.
There are seven sacraments, but the two greatest are Baptism and the Mass (or Eucharist) as they come from Jesus’ direct commands. Both of them are pledges of the new covenant established between God and us.
A sacrament is where something material and every day (water, oil, bread and wine) is used by God to bring blessing and grace.
